Surakarta City, which is often referred to as Solo City or Sala City, is a small town located in the administrative region of Central Java Province. The city is famous for its cultural diversity reflected in batik, keroncong, wayang kulit, and the traditional Joglo as well as Dutch heritage architecture.
The city history began when Treaty of Giyanti 1755 split the area of Mataram Empire into what is now called as Surakarta and Special Region of Yogyakarta. Surakarta has several tourism attractions. Most of them are historical attractions like ancient ruins, historic buildings, or tourism villages. Because of the city’s small size, approximately only 44 square kilometers, and the fact that the city’s topography is less diverse, the city does not have any stand out natural attractions.
In fact, some of the tourist sites mentioned in Solo is actually located other districts that surround the city, such as Karanganyar, Sukoharjo, Boyolali, Klaten District, Sragen and Wonogiri (the latter is rarely "confused with" because it is located quite away from the city of Solo). In addition, the cities around Surakarta are often referred to as "satelite cities". They are Kartasura, Colomadu, Solo Baru, Palur, Baki, and Ngemplak. If counted together with its suburbs, Surakarta’s size increased to about 150 square kilometers with a population of approximately 1 million inhabitants.
The tourist sites are the main objectives while on vacation to the city of Solo, among others Kasunanan Palace, Mangkunegaran Palace, Triwindu Antique Market, Ngarsopuro, National Press Monument, Radya Pustaka Museum, Amusement People Sriwedari, Taman Satwa Taru Jurug, Kampung Batik Laweyan, Kampung Batik Kauman, House of Danar Hadi, Citywalk in along Jalan Slamet Riyadi, Pasar Klewer, the Grand Mosque of Surakarta, Hardjonagoro Gedhe Market, and Fort Vastenburg.
